Gosh, it's been a while since I did a Blast From The Past post. For those of you who don't know what it is, it's when I take you waaaaay back into time to listen to a few hits that were hot back then, give a few fun facts about them. Sometimes, I also update you on their current status.
This time around, we're gonna take a look back at miss Mya and her hit single "It's All About Me" which featured non other than Sisqo. Then we will look at mister Sam Salter and his song "After 12, Before 6"..I bet some of yall forgot about this guy. Lastly, Ja Rule's smash "Put It On Me" with Vita & Lil Mo. Get into it below.
The Box". Remember that? You will remember soon. But anywho. "It's All About Me" was Mya's debut single and it was hot hot hot!! People we're like "who is this sexy Asian dancing all close to Sisqo? He was hot back then and all of the girls wanted him...don't lie and say you didn't becuase you did. But Mya snagged him for her song and video and during that time period, it was all about her because she was on top of her game. The song managed to peak at #6 on Billboard's Hot 100 and at #2 on the R&B Singles Chart. The song received mix reviews as she was quickly compared to the likes of Aaliyah, Monica and Brandy who all we're out at successful at the time. Despite the reviews, it went on to becomes one of her most successful singles to date. The self titled album has so far sold 1.4M copies to date giving it a platinum certification. Over the years, she has been busy keeping projects moving. She most recently released her album "K.I.S.S." (Keep It Sexy & Simple) in 2011, first in Japan and later in the U.S. via iTunes. Currently, Mya is in the studio working on a new album said to be called "Beauty & The Streets Vol 2". Lets take it back a notch...peep the video below.
Sam Salter and the song "After 12, Before 6"!! You have to! He didn't really have a hit or two but iff you were big on BET in the late 90's and tuned into the show "Midnight Love", then this video and song will ring a bell. Sam was signed to a recording contract when a demo that he cut fell into the hands of L.A. Reid. He and Babyface quickly began working on his debut album called "It's On Tonight" but the American people didn't think it was on.....not one bit. The album was released and peaked at #199 on Billboard's 200 Albums Chart. But the single did okay. The song managed to reach #51 on Billboard's Hot 100 and #19 on the R&B Singles Chart. Not too bad right? Okay I know there were bigger acts in the 90's but I always like the song. Check it out below.
Ja Rule. This song birthed the Ja Rule that we all know and love. "Put It On Me" was his first top 10 single and the rest is history. The song was originally recorded by him and Vita, then Lil Mo laced her vocals on the track for the official remix which catapulted it to the top. The song was released in December of 2000 and shot straight to #8 on Billboard's Hot 100 and #2 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Singles Chart, #11 on the Rap Singles Chart and #24 on the Pop Chart. The video for the song managed to top MTV's Video Countdown for an entire week. Also, it was on BET's 106th & Park for so long that it had to be retired. At the very end of 2001, the video also topped BET's Notorized snatching the #1 spot for the best 100 videos released that year. Aaliyah's "Rock the Boat" bowed at #2. Check it out below.
That's all for now! I hope you enjoyed the blast from the past!! There will be more to come...and often!
