Nicki Minaj sure does know how to keep her name in the mouths of the world. Yesterday, she dropped a buzz track called "Lookin' Ass N*gga". A few days before that, photos of her surfaced online of her partaking in a mystery shoot....this would be that.
In the track, she hung up the pop vocals and gave the people what they've been missing in their lives....hard and heavy rap. She puts every dude in their place with the "lookin' ass" lyrics. The song will be featured on the upcoming compilation album from the Young Money crew. It's called "Rise of the Empire" and will be out within the next few weeks.
The cover for this single sparked a lot of controversy which sparked Nicki to issue a state regarding the cover, the song and actually removing it from the social media networks. The cover features the infamous photo of Civil Rights activist Malcolm X peeking out of a window while holding a gun. See all of the action below.
When I tell you that Nicki went hard in the song....SHE WENT HARD! This is why she's still on top of the female rap game. She hung up that pop act and we right back to the streets. People wanted that hardcore and raw rap from her, and this is exactly what it is. She looked great! Well, great is an understatement. That girl was FLAWLESS, all while giving us that rap business! .....Lookin ass!
The N word was used heavily throughout the song, but hey....it's used more than that on a day to day basis. I wonder what the clean version sounds like? Also, people didn't give YG any pushback for his anthem "My N*gga". That song is blasted on all radio stations and uses the word "hitta" instead of "n*gga". So cut Nicki some slack.
Lastly, here is the cover that sent people into a frenzy..
Granted, this is a bold ass statement, and people had thier panties in a bunch about it. People called it ignorant, disrecpectful and even started petitions to have it removed....and it was. Nicki released this statement....
“What seems to be the issue now? Do you have a problem with me referring to the people Malcolm X was ready to pull his gun out on as Lookin Ass Niggaz? Well, I apologize. That was never the official artwork nor is this an official single.
This is a conversation. Not a single. I am in the video shooting at Lookin Ass Niggaz and there happened to be an iconic photo of Malcolm X ready to do the same thing for what he believed in!!!! It is in no way to undermine his efforts and legacy.
I apologize to the Malcolm X estate if the meaning of the photo was misconstrued. The word “nigga” causes so much debate in our community while the “nigga” behavior gets praised and worship. Let’s not. Apologies again to his family.
I have nothing but respect an adoration for u. The photo was removed hours ago. Thank you”
All I have to say about the situation is that everyone has an opinion. If they didn't the world wouldn't go round. I've heard waaaay worse songs than this and have seen covers that are just plain offensive. This song, nor does the cover make me feel as if they are disrespectful. This is art. Art is normally an expression of how someone feels...and obviously Nicki felt some type of way while recording this song and shooting the video. I think it all works! I don't see anything wrong with the song, the cover or the video. What about you? Share your thoughts below.
