We all knew it wouldn't be long before someone else tested the "surprise release" waters like Beyonce did with her latest album last December. She shattered records with such a bold move and saw so much profit and success with it. So much that it's inspired another big named artist to follow in her footsteps.
According to Digitial Music News, Apple & iTunes are structuring a very similar deal with someone who has yet and possibly will not be named. The source tells them that the world has definitely heard of this artist and if all goes well, there are multiple acts that are looking to seal the same exclusive deal.
The news site reports...
”So you’re going to see something similar coming up, [unnamed artist] really likes the idea.”
“I’m not sure it will top Beyoncé, but it will be ‘Beyoncé-esque’ let’s just say.”
”Spotify won’t get this, [nor will] any streaming service for that matter. You will have to buy this from iTunes.”
Asked if this will be a video-intensive release with a surprise release date, one of the sources only pointed to a healthy mix of video and audio. But there probably won’t be videos for each and every song. In terms of release strategy, the artist under discussion is deciding the best way to release, with a well-orchestrated, pre-release notification to fans more likely than a flat-out surprise.
But one thing is certain, according to our sources: this artist will be working direct-to-fan channels like Twitter, email, Facebook, SMS and several other channels ‘very aggressively,’ with ‘special giveaways and bonuses’ for the most dedicated and interested fans. ”
There may be something to reward the best fans,” one of the sources with knowledge of the deal relayed, while pointing to a possible live concert tie-in. Beyond that hint, there were no further details on that aspect.
“[The artist] really likes what Beyoncé did, the independence of it. Streaming might come later, but that isn’t decided yet.
”There’s the whole ‘if you don’t make it available on Spotify you’re cheating your fans’ thing,” one source continued. ”But [this artist] doesn’t really buy into that thought.
“[The artist] feels there are compensation problems [on streaming platforms].”Source: Digital Music News
Hmmmmm, I wonder who it could be? Usher? Chris Brown? Rihanna? Alicia Keys? Nicki Minaj? Adele? Mariah Carey? Michael Jackson? Only time will tell. Personally, I don't think this "surprise release" thing will work for everyone. The ONLY reason why I think Beyonce saw so much success with it was the fact that THE WORLD was waiting for a new album from her.
We knew it was coming, but we didn't know when. Beyonce had the world on a waiting binge. She teased us with new music, we saw her shooting videos almost every day, she fooled us with the Pepsi Commercial announcement, the "Grown Woman" single, the Super Bowl performance and the first leg of her "Mrs. Carter" world tour. She just stringed us along for an entire year. So we knew that something was coming. The anticipation was building, and it was all released at the end of the year.
The other aspect that I feel Beyonce has down pact is having a tight knit and trust worthy team. No one spilled the beans, no one spoke about anything, Not one producer, writer, director, dancer or anyone. The ones that did, like (Ne-Yo, Azaleia Banks etc..) did not make the album. Everyone had their thoughts and put in their two cents so we knew an album was on the way.
She knew we were hungry for the new album, so she fed us and we ate it up like dogs. So with that being said, let me ask you this...who else could we possibly be waiting for? The few names I mentioned above couldn't even compare to the anticipation that Beyonce built over the past few years. Even still, if it is one of them above, they would not see the success that Beyonce saw.
So whoever this is, lets just see what the outcome will be and I do hope they have a full blown promotional backup plan just in-case this fails. Beyonce did no promotion, and still isn't. There hasn't been any television interviews, no performances with the exception of her tour, The Grammys and The Brit Awards. So I'm curious to know who this person is and whether they will succeed or fail. Who do you think it could be? Voice your thoughts below.
