This Aaliyah biopic has been in the works for well over 10 years with drama behind it. The production was on again, off again and people were dropping left and right from the project. Reports surfaced that family members were not ready for a movie of their beloved Aaliyah and that they were still mourning her death. Keshia Chante even spoke about her bowing out of production after learning that the deceased singer's family didn't want to have anything to do with the project.
So fast forward to today. Fresh news has surfaced regarding the film and word on the street is that VH1 picked up the rights and the biopic is in pre-production. The news comes as a potential candidate who auditioned for the role was overlooked and she spilled the beans on her Instagram page. Her name, Tristin Mays and she had nothing but good things to say about the audition of a lifetime. The film is called "The Aaliyah Story" Check out her photo post and message below.
Normally I wouldn’t do something like this. But a very close friend of mine, @loganlaurice, gave me the courage to speak up about something that’s been pending and sitting on my heart. Today, I can’t be upset that I didn’t book the role I worked so hard for.
This may have been the most difficult, emotional, inspiring, and lengthy audition process I’ve ever experienced. Getting the chance to portray someone I’ve always loved and admired so much was a blessing every single step of the way.
I invested every ounce of my body mind and soul into this process and I can honestly say I’m proud of myself. God definitely has something incredible in store for me. A huge thank you to everyone who believed in me and spoke up for me in the room.
And a huge congratulations to everyone in the cast!#TheAaliyahStory.
Like Logan said, you’re satisfied no matter the outcome of things that aren’t in your control.
Wow! I'm happy that this is finally happening! I wonder who got the part? I was listening to the Rickey SMiley Morning Show this morning and Gary had the TEA BABY! He said that one of the former hosts from 106th & Park got the role. I know, for a FACT that he's not talking about one of the ratchet girls when that show had like 45 hosts at one time.
I think he got the girls mixed up because Keshia Chante has been named to portray Aaliyah for so long and she is a CURRENT host on 106th & Park. Not to mention that the two favor, more so than Tristin..(no offense). But I think that's who got the role. I could be wrong, and as you can see, details are slim but I will follow this store like no other!
The other thing is that, VH1 did a good job with the TLC biopic. It was highly successful and I'm sure this will do the same for ratings. Fans, like myself, have been waiting years and years for this to happen and to see that it's being breathed to life just makes me all kinds of warm and fuzzy inside!!
