Drama Surrounding Lifetime's Aaliyah Biopic / by

Well, as you may know, it was announced last week that Zendaya Coleman snagged the role in an upcoming Lifetime Movie Network biopic of the late Aaliyah. Somehow, no one knew that this biopic was even in the works. The world knew about a VH1 produced flick and so did they family for that matter, but nothing was ever confirmed as the family is still unsure about a film for they're babygirl.

Well, Lifetime doesn't give two shits because even without permission from the family and Aaliyah's record label, the network announced a biopic, revealed the star who's playing Aaliyah and seems to be pushing forward with re-recording music for the flick. Fans are not happy, Aaliyah's family is not happy and a lot of things are being done to stop the movie from even happening.

First, lets start with the petition. It reads...

This petition is to stop the making of this Aaliyah biopic. It's wrong that Aaliyah's mother or brother didn't have a say so in this movie that is being made. The fans didn't get a say so and neither did any of Aaliyah's friends.
As her fans, we're going to do anything in our power to stop this movie. Little do we know, this is hurting Mrs. Haughton and Rashad. They're about to make something that didn't even get approved from her family.
That is beyond disrespectful. If you agree that this movie shouldn't be made, you need to vote. If you really respect Aaliyah, you have to respect her mother and her brothers wishes. It's only right. It was Aaliyah's life. And they're taking it too far now. We need to put a stop to this!

After word got out that Zendaya was playing Aaliyah, fans went into an uproar. They disagreed with the casting choice because some feel that she looks nothing like the late singer and most recently, people are saying she's not black enough. Zendaya has been critiziced so much that she responded to the backlash via Twitter.

TMZ also caughtup with the star at the airport and they asked her about not being black enough for the role.

A lot of people say I’m not black enough. Half black is just enough. It doesn’t matter what color you are, it’s about how you portray the character. For those that don’t know, Angela Bassett and Tina Turner, they look nothing alike but she was that character so I think that’s what it’s all about.”

The other big uproar is that this movie is being done without the support of the family and Aaliyah's label. The network is going against everyone's wishes by putting out this film and they're trying to stop it. The family revealed that they do not have any involvement in this upcoming film but wishes that people respect Zendaya and her family for they may not have known the details about the role.

The family also released a public statement regarding how they feel about the entire ordeal and their plans to put a stop to it.

“Aaliyah was more than a singer, she was -and is still – an American music icon whose legacy continues to live on and influence today’s music culture, just as Ray Charles, Notorious B.I.G., Selena and Johnny Cash.
Considering the magnitude of her fans’ affection alone, she deserves to have a tribute much more grand than a television network debut that won’t even consider the perspectives of those who were closest to Aaliyah.
Disregarding the families and dishonoring the legacies of celebrated figures who have passed on, big networks want to exploit their stories for a buck. We’re here to make it clear that it’s not okay!
Lifetime Television is trying to dictate the status of our heroes, our heroines and – in this case – our beloved Aaliyah. We implore everyone to call Lifetime Television, send emails and bombard social media so they know we demand respect for our cultural icons.
We will not sit idly by while they misrepresent and reap profits from our luminaries. There is more at stake than the public could imagine.”

Now, it is clearly known that the family is not here for the movie, now the real question is, will Zendaya pull out like Keshia Chante did when she found out the exact same? How can this even go on you ask? Well, the answer would be Aaliyah's uncle and manager Barry Hankerson. If his Twitter account is anything to go by, then it will seem as if he is involved in the biopic and is the man behind the music for the late singer. He's showed his support for Zendaya  and he commencement of the movie.

The problem is that it's Aaliyah's immediate family (her mom, dad & brother) that aren't okay with the entire thing. Now here's how I feel. I am all for an Aaliyah movie. HOWEVER, if  a movie is done, then it needs to be portrayed to the fullest. That cannot be done without Aaliyah's closest family and friends. If Barry is the only one to be involved then the world would only see one side of her.

It would not be an actual biopic IMO. So I'm here for the film, but things need to be done right, and that begins with respecting the family's wishes. So all eyes will be on Zendaya to see what she will do...What do you think she should do? Should she pull out of the film since the family does not support it, or should she keep it going?
